Women’s History

Women’s History

It’s the last day of March and I’ve not written a word about Women’s History Month, which ends today.

Or have I? A few weeks ago my post on 18th-century midwife Martha Ballard mentioned how Ballard’s story would not have survived had she not kept a diary.

We would have no need for women’s history month if through the centuries women had been given the same access, power and time as men. Which is why we have Women’s History Month — to right a wrong, to celebrate the overlooked.

We can try to reclaim the forgotten voices, but we can’t unearth what was never written in the first place. We can’t celebrate what was never painted, sculpted or composed.

All we can do is honor that which did survive, and pray that going forward, our daughters and granddaughters will have the time they need to tell their stories.
